I wish I'd seen this movie before writing the RCM music-history exam I took a couple of years ago! I really enjoyed how the film managed to convey a great deal of information about the life and music of Mozart, while at the same time telling a pretty compelling fictional story about the 'confrontation' between Mozart and his rival-of-sorts, Salieri.

The most fascinating thing about the story is in the nature of the contempt and hatred that Salieri holds towards Mozart: he hates Mozart not because everyone recognizes Mozart as the superior composer (though this is true), but because Salieri himself also recognizes the superiority of Mozart as a composer. In this respect, the story is less about Mozart, and more about Salieri's internal struggle against God: Salieri is enraged by the notion that God would seemingly imbue the childish and obscene Mozart with such musical genius, yet leave Salieri to act purely as his "patron-saint of mediocrity".

At times, though, the movie seemed a little long-winded (maybe that's because I watched the "Director's Cut," with 20-odd minutes of extra footage), and the fairly "modern" style of acting didn't quite seem to fit in with the 18th century setting (moreso with some character than others, but particulary with Mozart and Constanze).

I remember seeing this movie in grade 8 music. At the time I didn't really care, it was just something we got to do instead of work. What really struck me back then, though, was how complicated music really is (playing the guitar I've found that out). Mozart finished (or tried to, it was a while ago) a composition even on his deathbed. That doesn't have a lot to do with the movie, I just thought I'd throw it in.

Actually, Pete, I understand that one part of the "extended footage" of Amadeus is a sequence where Mozart and Salieri work together on the Requiem (Mozart's last composition) while Mozart is essentually dying right there while they're working on it. Mozart is basically dictating to Salieri what to write, and Salieri is writing it.
I thought this was one of the best scenes for two reasons: 1) it really shows how Mozart's composition was actually done *inside his head*, and how easily he is able to just tell Salieri what to write without looking at any papers or sitting at the keyboard... and 2) it further emphasis the respect and admiration that Salieri had for Mozart's music: sure, Salieri hates Mozart, but he loves his music, so he's doing all he can to help Mozart actually finish the composition (of course, I suppose you'd also have to consider the fact that Salieri originally intended to pass the work off as his own... but I kinda got the impression that, by the end of the movie, Salieri wasn't too concerned about doing that anymore).

Ya, that's what I was thinking of.
