American History X

3.5 / 5

The ending of American History X kind've frustrates me. I don't know whether or not that was an intentional move by the filmmakers, but it basically seems to negate the positive message that the film goes to such lengths to establish.

Other than the ending, though, it's a pretty strong film. There's something inherently fascinating about things like neo-Nazism -- I think it's because, in this day and age, those kind of groups are so incredibly wrong in both a moral and rational sense that they simply should not even exist (that's one of the cool things about movies: they can give you access into worlds that you would otherwise never be able to experience).

And of course, excellent acting by Edward Norton, as well as the rest of the cast.

you know, i don't think the ending negates anything...it just brings some irony with the fact that *the ending* (geez, i hate trying to talk around spoilers) happened regardless of the character's progression, it's just unfortunate that it happened at that time in his life, you know?

also, i'm really not sure what the difference between "nazi" and "neo-nazi" is (i'd think that neo- just means "new nazi"...but apparently that's not the case...i definitely think they were more than just a white power group, but i don't know what defines each of these...just be careful who you *ahem* use these terms around ;) )
