The character of Ron Burgundy isn't quite up to the comedic standards that Will Ferrell is able to reach, and I'm a little bit surprised that he decided to make a full-length movie featuring him. A comment I've heard in relation to characters like Ron Burgundy is that they'd be better off -- probably -- in short Saturday Night Live-type skits. I'd have to agree; I just don't think Ron Burgundy is funny enough to carry a whole movie. Not that Will Ferrell's acting is necessarily to blame (though I suppose as co-writer of the film, it's his responsibility in other ways), it's just that the "legendary" Ron Burgundy seemed a little too dry, dull, and not 'over-the-top' enough to make him a really memorable character.
Thankfully, there are other parts of the film that make up for the lack of its central character's draw; namely, a seriously-hilarious bit of animal abuse, a totally wacky multiple-news-team street-brawl, and a short subtitled bit that worked to much better effect than a similar gag attempted in Lemony Snicket. So overall, Anchorman was worth watching, but I don't think Ron Burgundy needs to be appearing in any sequels anytime soon.
Yeah, I just don't think Will Farrell can pull off a whole movie himself. His characters are great in short bits or as supporting characters, but I think too much Will Farrell isn't a good thing. Brick was my favourite. He killed a man :)
This movie was kind've almost the opposite of Napoleon Dynamite: N.D. had a hilarious character in a pretty bad movie, and Anchorman has a pretty unexceptional character in a really funny movie.
LOL...I just watched it...the news team street brawl was hilarious haha..."Brick..where did u get a hand grenade from?" hehe...
