Do you ever go into the video store with the desire to actually rent a really bad movie? Well, that's how I felt yesterday when I stopped into Rogers Video (I don't feel that way often, but it does happen...). It's kind of a weird feeling, doing that. It helped, slightly, that I had a number of free-rental coupons, and I wasn't about to actually pay for the thing. It was almost a little embarrising walking up to the front counter with the DVD case for Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (and what a silly name for a movie... I mean "Ecks" and "Sever" aren't even really fighting against each other except for a few minutes closer to the beginning of the movie!).
Anway, I always try to give every movie I see a fair chance. All was going well with this movie until the following opening credit appeared:
Directed By: Kaos
Uhhhh.... okay. It was all downhill from there.
Well, that's not totally true. I mean, I've seen worse films this year. But nevertheless, this was still a pretty lame effort at an action movie. There was pretty much nothing original here at all. Because of that, scenes of explosions and destruction and fighting and such -- that seem like they should be exciting -- really aren't, because so many other films have been there, done that.
Oh, there was one really cool thing about the movie. It was filmed entirely in Vancouver, and (believe it or not) is actually set in Vancouver. What a novel idea! But anyway, that's about all this movie has going for it. If you ever go into the video store looking for a bad movie, this'll certainly fit the bill.
Unlike Geoff, I actually enjoyed this movie. Gratned, I wasn't expecting a lot, so I didn't have too much to be disappointed. Anyway, I found it to be an enjoyable, mindless escapism sort of movie. Added to that, I am a push-over for happy endings, and this one had that. Besides, there is something encouraging about a movie that actually goes against the predictable, in that neither Ex or Sever died. One would expect the old cleche ending of Lucy Lu dying to save the wife and kid, or something like that. It was just a mindless happy story with some fighting. And it was set and filmed in Vancouver. I also like both actors.
