This strange mixture of horror, action, love-story, period-piece, martial-arts, and monster-movie seemed to me like a definite case of style over substance. Think Tim Burton on drugs. Nearly every scene and sequence in the film is presented in some kind of stylized manner, but it didn't really seem to have any purpose other than to 'look cool' - the story itself is pretty thin.
On the plus side, though, aside from the occasional bit of shakey CGI, Brotherhood of the Wolf has one of the coolest-looking movie-monsters I've ever seen.
sorry randy, that one of your posts wasn't the first that i commented on ;)
i just gotta say that this is my favorite movie.. did you watch this on dvd or video? i'd like to know how good the extras on the dvd are.
while the plot is totally unbelievable (i don't think it's thin, though) i think it's pretty imaginative. on a side note the opening scene scared the crap out of me in theatre.
Hey there, Mr. "ali".
Here's the thing: I was a little tired when I watched this. I think that *maybe*, had I been completely alert, the cool cinematography and production-design may have actually been able to engage me a little more than they actually did, and as such, I may have liked it a little better. But yeah, the story itself certainly didn't grab me as much as I hoped that it would (as I've heard many great things about the movie, and I'm not surprised to find that negative opinions about Brotherhood of the Wolf seem to be the minority).
Of course, this raises another question that's kind've a struggle to answer: is it fair for me to make a judgement on a movie that I was not able to focus 100% on? Well, I suppose the answer is 'no' :-)
But on the other hand, I have no doubt that if the movie was better, it would have engaged me more than it did, regardless of whether I was a little tired or not.
Thanks for the comment, though... Keep 'em coming!
Haha I'm a girl! =D ali = alison
haha well the way i see it.. hmm. i have no problem with *manly eye candy* during movies.. and botw had no manly eye candy that i could see. and i still thought it was an awesome movie. thus, they must have done -something- right to keep my attention while i was busy lamenting over the lack of hawt men haha
oh yeah.. i'd really like to see what you think of todd solondz's movie Happiness. so if you're ever bored or don't have anything to watch you could always hoof it down to blockbuster or something and check it out.
Hehe, sorry... I guess I was thinking along the lines of Muhammad, y'know? :D
Anyway, I also forgot to answer the first questions you originally asked... I watched it on DVD. However, I didn't get around to seeing any of the extra features (I rarely do on DVDs that I rent). There's actually two versions of "Brotherhood of the Wolf" out on DVD, one of which actually has three disks(!), so I'd assume there's plenty of good stuff on that.
And yeah, I kinda feel as though I must've missed something with this... the vast majority of what I've read about it has been positive. I guess I'll have to watch it again some time.
I haven't seen "Happiness" yet, but I've come very close to renting it on a few occasions... and I will, eventually. I'm interested in seeing "Storytelling" too.
Pefrect shot! Thanks for your post!
