Catch Me If You Can is a pretty solid and entertaining movie, though it didn't strike me as much more than that. I'm not sure if I really understand the huge amount of praise this movie's getting from a lot of people.
Come to think of it, though, I'm really not sure if I can find fault with anything whatsoever in the whole movie. It's funny at times, has a smart script about an interesting story, and the acting is very good. I suppose the only problem with it is that, despite being good on pretty much every level, there's nothing in it that made it seem great to me.
Anyway, I'd still recommend it. The most interesting aspect was Leonardo DiCaprio's motivations for pulling off the various cons and impersonations that we see throughout the movie. DiCaprio's character ("inspired by" the real-life con-man Frank Abignale Jr.) shows an amazing ability to convince others that he is a completely different -- and much older -- person than he really is (a teenager who has not even completed highschool). What's interesting, though, is that DiCaprio's character pulls off his cons and impersonations because he seems to hold something of an immature belief that, if only he can shower his seperated parents with a large amount of money, their relationship problems will all be solved and the whole family will be able to live together happily, the way they used to.
Oh, and one other aspect of the film that I really liked was John Williams's musical score. It was one of the more original scores I've heard in a while.
I agree, the movie was quite entertaining despite it's length (which was almost 3 hours including commercials and previews) Although some of the cons seemed a little far fetched for today's standards, there really weren't any apparent flaws in the story as Geoff said. Overall, pretty good.
Oh, another thing that I really liked about this was the opening credits. They were really cool :-)
yeah, the opening credits rocked...funny how it basically spanned the whole film...the music at that point was fun, and the animation style was a bit of a throwback to that time period
it still bugs me about that shot where frank and the flight attendants get out of the car and walk towards miami airport...i'm *convinced* that it was a poorly done blue(or green?)screen...they don't seem to be walking on the ground...argh!!
like geoff said, nothing really wrong with the movie (aside from that shot ;) ), cool, entertaining, but nothing *great* about it
i wonder where frank, sr. got those bracelets...hmmm....
Best line of the movie:
"You guys wanna here a joke?"
"Sure"
"Knock knock"
"Who's there?"
"Go fuck yourselves"
I'll try to put this to good use immeditaley.
