Before discovering the 'secret' of what's going on in The Forgotten, it worked for me as a fairly competent psychological thriller. Nothing spectacular, but decent enough to keep me wondering what was going to happen next. If you've seen any advertisements, you know that the movie involves Julianne Moore as a mom searching for the son she knows she has, but according to everyone else, has apparently never existed. Couple that with the crazy people-getting-sucked-up-into-the-sky moments that they highlighted in the ads, and you really get curious as to just what the heck is going on!
But without giving anything away, when the key to what's happening is revealed, I couldn't help but think, "Oh. I guess that's kinda neat. Strange. Hmm... no, wait a sec... is that it? That's what all those cool commercials were alluding to? Nothing else?? Well that definitely wasn't worth it. Jeez, that actually kinda sucks." In other words, I was severely under-whelmed.
Regardless, The Forgotten has its merits, I suppose. It's just not as smart as it thinks it is.
Yeah Geoff, I totally agree.
When you finally really figure out what's going on, I was all like "Oh... that's it? ....meh..." it was pretty cheezey from that point on... I was expecting something really smart and unexpected, but what happened was actually kinda what I figured was going on, but thought was too stupid to be what was actually going on...
Still, I wouldn't say that I was "severely under-whelmed".
