Full Frontal

2.5 / 5

I've been trying to think about how to describe Steven Soderbergh's Full Frontal, but I realized it would be very difficult to do in any sort of brief way. See, there are a couple of twists in the film that occur just when you think the plot has settled into its groove, and these twists send the film off into completely different directions. It's not that the film is completely incoherent or anything, it's just that these twists really seem to detract from the film more than they add to it. Anyway, I'll just say that the film involves a group of people trying to make a movie, a woman who's about to leave her husband, a stage director trying to create a comedy about Hitler, and finally, David Duchovny's penis.

The unique thing about Full Frontal is the 'realistic' style in which it was filmed. I believe that most of the actors weren't given much to work with in terms of a script, but were instead asked to just act according to an established situation as if it were real life. It's an interesting idea, I guess, but it got a little annoying when the voice-overs started having these long... ....uhh... ...'realistic'... ...um... ...pauses between words.

So anyway, the concepts that Soderbergh plays around with here are not bad, and he certainly deserves credit for trying something new. Unfortunately, the execution of these concepts left a lot to be desired.
