I, Robot

Director Alex Proyas is responsible for my all-time favourite sci-fi movie, Dark City (it's also one of my all-time favourite movies period). So, I had moderately high hopes for his latest sci-fi movie, a very loose adaptation of Isaac Asimov's I, Robot. I say only "moderately high" because the advertisements set the film up as a standard big-budget action movie, complete lots of cool explosions, and sporting a mega-star (Will Smith) in the lead role as a wise-cracking cop.

I got pretty much what I expected. It's a straight-up action flick, with just a touch more intelligence than most, but also with way too much wise-cracking one-liners from Smith (nothing against Will Smith at all -- I actually quite like him as an actor; it's more of a problem with the clichéd action-movie script). The special effects are really quite good though, and they make for a very nice-looking film.

I wasn't disappointed with I, Robot -- it's really not a bad effort. But I do hope that it's one of those 'big budget' films that a great director does for fun every once in a while, in-between more serious and worthy efforts.
