Watching Igby Goes Down, I couldn't help but think of another really bad movie I saw a while ago: The Good Girl. It wasn't that the two films really had a lot in common in terms of their plot; it was more that both films were populated entirely with really stupid characters, none of whom were in any way shape or form 'nice' people.

Kieran Culkin plays the title character, a spoiled teenage with a near-evil mother and a father who lives in a mental hospital. He's been kicked out of almost every private school on the west coast, and he's proud of it. Igby spends the entire film doing, well... nothing. And by 'nothing' I mean wandering around, running away from his mother, meeting awful people, and continuously making 'witty' remarks about how other people suck, and how he is so much superior to everyone else. None of this was enjoyable to watch. The one redeeming bit of the film was Jeff Goldblum as D.H. Banes, Igby's mega-rich godfather.

Igby Goes Down is another one of those films that I'm at a loss to see why so many critics raved over it. I thought it was poring, pretentious crap (and boring pretentious crap is usually the worst kind of crap).
