Insomnia

4.0 / 5

Insomnia isn't quite as complex as Christopher Nolan's last film, Memento, but it still holds up as a very tight and clever piece of filmmaking. The storyline (albeit an almost complete copy of a 1997 Norweigan film of the same name) ask some challenging questions regarding exactly how 'bad' the villian is, and just how 'good' the hero is.

Robin Williams pulls off 'The Villian' part very well (though I thought Williams's character in One Hour Photo was slightly more interesting overall), and Al Pacino (along with his make-up crew, I imagine) does a really great job of looking really tired throughout most of the film.

There's some very interesting cinematography here as well: despite taking place in a city drenched in permanent daylight, so much of the film looks dark, dank, and bleak -- and thick shadows seem to cover every corner.

Interestingly the most etrmexe example of this is Elvis, whose estate is notoriously proprietary, and whose music almost impossible to find
