Kill Bill: Vol. 2

3.5 / 5

Kill Bill: Vol. 1 was a wonderfully bizarre, refreshingly original (at least, to my North American sensibilities) exercise in purely stylistic cinema. Volume Two isn't quite as good, as it seemed to be a little more 'straightforward' and, of course, not quite so original, having seen Volume One. Still, it was an entertaining movie, and if the two parts are to be considered as two halves of the same film, then I'd describe that film as 'very good'.

In comparison to the first volume, there really isn't much more in the way of a story to elaborate on. Basically, The Bride (Uma Thurman) finishes what she set out to do in Volume One, including (and I don't really suspect that I'm giving anything away here) finally confronting her former boss/now-arch-enemy Bill (a great multi-dimensioned performance by David Carradine).

While not as good as the first film, there are a couple of individual sequences that really stood out to me as excellent pieces of filmmaking: a flashback to The Bride's early martial arts training (strangely hilarious), and live burial sequence (wonderfully uncomfortable). It seemed to me, however, that there just weren't as many great moments as there was in the first film. But, if you enjoyed Volume One, then you're almost sure to enjoy this film.
