Napoleon Dynamite

1.5 / 5

What can I say about a movie like this? It's one gigantic mess. Napoleon Dynamite stumbles around aimlessly from one totally unrelated subject to another, forgets about them completely, and ends up right back where it started with nothing having been accomplished.

Before all you Napoleon-lovers come running at me with your nunchucks flailing, proudly wearing your "Vote for Pedro" t-shirts, let me say this: the Napoleon Dynamite character is possibly one of the funniest characters I've seen in a movie. The guy is seriously priceless; I'm looking forward to a sequel if only so we can have more N.D. quotes to throw around.

It's too bad he's in such a mess of a film though. Here's my hypothesis as to what happened: the creators of the character (and the guy who plays the character himself, Jon Heder) probably knew they had a really good thing going on. So good, in fact, that they felt that placing such a great character into a "normal" high-school comedy was just out of the question. "Normal" comedies are usual mediocre comedies, and that would be unacceptable for a creation as exceptional as Napoleon Dynamite. So, they turned a complete 180 degrees and tried to make their film as quirky and out-of-the-ordinary as possible.

I don't think it worked. True, it's one of those movies that I think back to and laugh at certain scenes or moments (and quotes, of course), but I can't say I enjoyed it very much while I was actually watching it.

You know Geoff, you're probably the first person I've talked to that looks at this movie the same way I do. It's really the character(s) that makes the movie. The rest of it is kind of...off. I enjoyed the movie and enjoyed watching it again. But I think the big emphasis is on characters. It certainly isn't the storyline or cinematography. And for those who think that there is "no story" I have to argue there is...it just isn't very good. But maybe that's a good thing. After all, today's movies all seem to have the same storylines, the ones that don't are "art" films that seem to be made purely for winning awards as they tend to lean toward the acadamy's tastes...but thats a whole other rant for a whole other day.

I just watched this movie and i must say it was terrible...There was no real, the characters were dumb, and there we're any funny parts in this movie at all...I dont know why people say it was funny, or that the characters were funny..They really werent..in fact they couldnt be more boring thann they were...
