One Hour Photo

4.5 / 5

One of the online film-columnists that I read regularly (David Poland) compared One Hour Photo to Stanely Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. I didn't particularly care for Eyes Wide Shut, but I really liked One Hour Photo -- and I think the comparison is valid. As in most Kubrick films, every single detail in One Hour Photo seems to have been carefully thought out; every shot in the film has a very specific purpose, especially in terms of the colours and framing used.

I was also particularly impressed with Robin Williams's acting. He very successfully manages to come across as thoroughy disturbing and creepy, but he's also very sad and sympathetic. This is the best performance by anyone I've seen in quite a while.

Overall, One Hour Photo is definitely the sort of movie that will reward multiple viewings, and will probably get better each time you see it.

you know, i think the reason i didn't really think "great performance" was because it really didn't seem like a performance at all...which is what makes it great

i'd still argue that his insomnia role was better (maybe because i enjoyed the character even more), but williams was really good in one hour photo...very subtle stuff there, very good

my favourite parts were when they mentioned things like agfa (har, i'm such a nerd :P )

I agree that Williams in Insomnia was really good (wow... two really great performances in a row. Not to mentioned Death to Smoochy, in which Williams was the saving grace. He's really on a roll, and I'm definitely looking forward to what he does next).
But anyway, I thought Williams was better in One Hour Photo than in Insomnia. I think that's mainly due to the writing of the character itself. In Insomnia, he's essentially just the Bad Guy (though a fairly interesting one, at that). But in One Hour Photo, he's actually a very conflicted character, who really evolves and changes over the course of the film. And I agree with you, Randy, that it's such a natural performance by Williams that it almost doesn't even seem like a performance.
One Hour Photo and Signs are up there right now as the two best movies I've seen this year.
