When I first started hearing about Panic Room and seeing some of the previews for it, I thought, "Cool, another David Fincher movie! Looks like it'll be dark and mysterious, with lots of cool plot elements and twists..." I was definitely more than a little dissappointed to discover that, Nope, it's basically just a story about some bad-guys trying to steal some money. More than anything, it's an exercise in style for Fincher, without a whole lot of substance.
That's not completely a bad thing, however. I mean, there are lots of cool stylistic things going on in the movie, and I really like how the camera seemed free to move anywhere throughout the house. But still, it's all just style over substance. After one of the many technically impressive scenes throughout the film, I asked myself, "Wow, that shot was really cool... but what, exactly, was the point of having the camera move through the coffee-pot handle?" Seems like the answer would likely have been, "Because we can... and because it looks cool!"
It's a fairly solid thriller though, with some decently suspensul moments -- but not much more than that.
I don't even know what to say, this made things so much eaesir!
