Passion of the Christ, The

As a fairly non-religious person, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ didn't impress me much. I'll admit that I was intrigued by the fact that it was being labelled one of the most violent films of all time, and while I'm not sure if I'd agree with that assessment, it was possibly the most violent film I've seen in which all the violence is directed towards a single person.

Still, when all is said and done, I was a little bored by the whole thing. Not much happens, and I don't mean that in the sense of it being a 'character-study' where plot takes a backseat to character development; nope, in The Passion there's basically no plot, and there's no character development either.

It seemed to me a bit like a case of a really good director (in this case, Mel Gibson) deciding to take a really great book (in this case, The Bible), and cutting out everything except the most visceral part (in this case, the last twelve-or-so hours in the life of Christ). Sure, it makes for a pretty powerful scene or two, but what's the point without context and development? Those who are more religiously-inclined could probably supply their own context to this film, but even then I'm not sure if there's much of a point in creating a film like this.

In the end, The Passion of the Christ played to me as an 'experimental' film -- a film without much point except as an experiment in pushing the limits and boundaries of both religion and violence on screen. I admire it for how well it's made (and it is very well made, with some really excellent cinematography), but that doesn't make up for the fact that it was pretty boring.

I agree with you on this one Geoff. The film is powerful because of its gruesomeness, but I don't think that it portrays a good message of what Christianity is. Christianity is not about how Jesus died, but his life before his death and his resurrection after it. I think the film could have been much more powerful if it included more of this.

Another thing about this movie that drove me absolutely nuts is all the slow motion. Really, how many times must we see him fall down so...incredibly...slooowly...ugh!?!

My friend also made the mistake of alluding to Monty Python's "The Life of Brian" at the beginning of the movie, which led me to feel incredibly disrespectful when I laughed at parts of the movie while people were sobbing all around me.

I don't often agree with your movie ratings, but I agree with your 2 stars on this one.

when i saw only two stars, i was a little surprised, but after reading the review, it's possible that i agree with you

i'd have to see it again to really comment, because i don't remember everything as clearly as i'd like, but i seem to think that the characterization was fine...i didn't need to know anything about christ's life beforehand, it was all about this situation he found himself in

i think it was VERY powerful, the crucifixion scene actually brought vera to tears and neither of us are religious

on the other hand, i couldn't help but think about scenes in the life of brian (not knowing anything about the source material when we watched it that time, i enjoyed it, but seeing the passion made me realise how brilliant it was! heh)
