Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

If Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl had been trimmed down by about twenty or thirty minutes, it probaby would have been one of the best "summer" movies I've seen in a long time. Unfortunately, it does begin to feel a little too long near the final acts, but it was still a fun, funny, and entertaining film.

Johnny Depp is great as Captain Jack Sparrow, the "best pirate in the Caribbean", (or the worst, depending on who you talk to). Sparrow is a thoroughly comedic character, but Depp nicely avoids playing him as a parody (that is, when Sparrow isn't acting like a bumbling fool, he's actually pretty smart). Orlando Bloom (Legolas from The Lord of the Rings) plays Will Turner, a lowly swordsmith who is hopelessly in love with Elizabeth Swan (Keira Knightley), the Governor's daughter. It turns out that Elizabeth is in possession of a gold medalion that is needed by the crew of the Black Pearl, a ghostly ship piloted by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). The Black Pearl is plagued by a curse of immortality and the inability to feel anything other than greed. When moonlight hits any of the cursed sailors, the true age of their bodies is revealed (mostly bones and ravaged flesh), which thanks to some spectacular special effects, looks really cool. When Elizabeth is kidnapped and taken aboard the Black Pearl, Captain Sparrow and Will Turner set off together to rescue her.

The inventiveness of the story, along with the great effects and production design, make Pirates of the Caribbean a lot of fun to watch. The acting is especially strong in all of the lead roles, too (it's nice how the lead female role, Elizabeth, is anything but the standard helpless damsel-in-distress that's found in a lot of action films). If Disney's next movie-based-on-a-ride film The Haunted Mansion (a preview for which played before the feature) is anywhere near as well-made as Pirates of the Caribbean, I'm sure it'll be a hit too. Hopefully they'll tighten up the pace a bit though, so it doesn't drag in places, as Pirates did.

Just got back from watching this movie and I have to say I also disagree with Geoff. I don't think it dragged on at all. I felt it was a good length, if it had been longer that would have been great too. I read a couple of reviews that mentioned the movie had kind of two parts: the pirates of the caribbean, and the curse of the black pearl. They said something about how they could be two seperate movies. I suppose it might have been possible, one being on the history of the pirates (do I see a prequel?) and another on ending the curse. But I think it was better as one movie. I also read that the fight scene between Jack and Barbossa is pointless (as neither can die at the time). I have to disagree though, I figured it was more of an ego thing. It's been Sparrow vs. Barbossa the whole time, this was just a continuation (plus, it did affect the ending). And one last thing. Did anyone else wonder what happened to Will's dad? *SPOILER* After all, if he was a pirate with the curse shouldn't he have been at the bottom of the ocean all those years? And did he stay down there until the curse was lifted and end up drowning? Or did he untie himself from the cannon and walk to shore, thus being on land for the transition? I think I can see a sequel...
