Punch-Drunk Love is basically a love story, but there's so much other stuff going on in this movie that it's a little misleading to simply describe it that way -- yet I'm not sure if I can really come up with any other sort of a description. I did kind of come away with the idea that maybe it's about how love can bring strength; only in this movie, that strength is manifested literally in Adam Sandler's character as the physical strength to overcome the various bad situations he gets himself into.
The film moves at a hyper pace between extremes of humour and sadness, and there are moments when it's difficult to determine whether you should laugh at Adam Sandler's character, or feel really sad for him. Throughout it all, a series of completely weird events happen that seem irrational at first, but make a lot of sense as the characters progress and develop. I really enjoy when a movie shows you something without fully explaining its significance as soon as it occurs -- or even at all.
Punch-Drunk Love is my favourite movie of the year, so far. Everything about it is good, from the acting (yeah, even Adam Sandler), to the directing, the cinematography, the music, and especially the script.
I agree. This is one of those kinds of movies you have to watch more than once to get the full meaning of it to sink in.. since the first time just goes so bloody fast. I gotta say I laughed my ass off in the very first scenes where that car comes out of NOwhere and crashes. This movie's so full of little quirks.. and Adam Sandler's character is amazing.
But haha how I loathed that song where him and his girlfriend meet in the airport terminal or whatever.. and it goes something like "He needs me, he needs me, he needs me!" over and OVER, and the octaves just get higher and higher. Oh my.
Good movie though.. I liked it a lot =)
oh sure, so busy with schoolwork you're going to the theatre? psssh ;)
i know you don't include spoilers geoff, but i try to avoid reading your reviews before i see the movies...unless i don't care to see it hehe
so no comments from me, aside from "hey, let's go see punch drunk love" ;)
Well hey, it's my first ten-outta-ten movie of the year... I wanna see it again!
haha, i'm a little late, but finally i've seen it
as i just discussed with ali, that song IS really stupid and annoying...but i love it!! along with the rest of the music throughout the film, it really fit well in the quirky/angsty/pure strangeness-y moods set
i don't subscribe to your idea that love gives strength (while flat out expressed by sandler)...instead, i figure he's had that power the whole time, but now he finally has something worth focussing it on rather than sliding glass doors, you know?
from a guy who really didn't like magnolia, this movie ROCKED!!!
Cool to hear that you liked it. It's nice to be able to share the love (*groan*) for a good movie!
Well, I finally made it out to this movie.
I think one of the things that makes me like this movie is that it seems so real. So many movies today are so fabricated. You can predict the plot, ending, and significance of every scene before even seeing the movie. 'Punch Drunk Love' is more real in the sense that there is this set of scenes that don't seem to be related, but as the movie goes on you see how people's different experiences and encounters contribute to their life and their personality. In life, we don't know the ending, we don't know the significance of all the things that happen to us, but everything somehow contributes to the shape of our person and our life.
'Punch Drunk Love' is not a movie that is composed of lines, scenes, and special effects. The character doesn't come to some huge epiphany or a big climactic scene that changes his life forever. He doesn't solve his anger-management problem, mend his relationship with his sisters, or get out of his "crappy" job. At the risk of sounding cliche, its all about the journey. In real life, sometimes things just happen. We don't know why they happen, but they become part of our lives.
That's why it doesn't matter where the piano came from.
A very good movie. : )
Glad you liked it too, Shannon... nice post by the way.
I agree with you about the 'not knowing where things are going to go' aspect of the movie (and, of course, of life in general).
"Punch-Drunk Love" is really not so much about an 'arch' of a story... it's really just the *beginning* of the relationship between Sandler and Watson. I don't remember the exact line that closes the film, but isn't it something like, "Now where do we start?" or something relating to how Watson is just about to give Sandler music lessons. That seems to me to be the point at which this relationship is really going to take off (and who knows... it may or may not work out for them).... Watson is more-or-less giving Sandler the gift of music (for lack of a better way of putting it), and this brought to my mind the idea of music "soothing the savage beast"...
Worst movie EVER!!!
I've seen some pretty bad movies, but this one just angers me. I want to break something because it was so stupid. I was sitting in suspense the whole movie thinking maybe something interesting would happen. The only thing I found interesting was when the phone sex chick called him by his real name instead of "Jack". I also found it weird how he figured out where the phone calls were coming from (the furniture store). Other than that this movie was a waste of time. I watch a movie to be entertained, not to watch "real life". This didn't even have anything to do with real life, so I don't know what you're all talking about. Don't tell me I need to be open minded to enjoy it, because I think I'm pretty open minded, and I know my girlfriend is, we both do like the odd, weird movie, but this one was just pathetic. There's 90 minutes I wish I didn't waste.
"I know my girlfriend is, we both do like the odd, weird movie"
heh, move over ron jeremy...
I loved that quote, what was it, I wanna suck your eyeballs right out of your skull and roll them around in my mouth, or something...plus the one about I wanna smash your face in with a hammer....or something. Yeah it was cool...Christina didn't like it though. ;-p
Call me wind because I am aboslutley blown away.
