Raising Arizona

3.0 / 5

Raising Arizona is about an incompetant career-criminal (Nicolas Cage) and a tough cop who fall in love and get married, only to find out that medical reasons prevent them from having any children. When the wife of a wealthy "unpainted furniture" store owner gives birth to quintuplets, the criminal and the cop decide to steal one of them and raise him as their own (figuring that five babies is more than enough for anyone, anyway).

This is one of the Coen brothers' earlier films, and it shows off a lot of the quirkiness that would become a staple of theirs throughout later films like Fargo (one of my all-time favourites) and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? But while it is pretty funny at times, it doesn't have any of that extra depth that seems to make their other films stand out from the ordinary crowd. Moreover, some of the comedy bits seemed a little forced.

Still, not a bad movie... it was worth watching.
