Ring, The

4.0 / 5

There are moments in other movies that have scared me more than any single moment in The Ring was able to. But overall I don't think I've ever seen another movie that was able to maintain such a high level of tension and creepiness throughout nearly its entire running length. In other words, I found The Ring to be seriously disturbing and relentlessly creepy.

This is in large part due to the fact that it's a generally well-made film. It resorts to the occasional cheap scare (sudden loud noises and quick cuts), but the strong directing, atmospheric sound-design, and genuinely interesting plot made up for those.

I imagine I'm probably not the only person who looked at their television a little, uh, suspiciously after getting home from the theatre...

and i JUST bought a tv AAAHHHH!!!

good movie, still creeped out most about the horse :'(

#2 - Posted by Geoff on November 7, 2002 11:07 PM:

I thought of something today about The Ring and why it seemed so disturbing. I think maybe a large part of it is because it really plays off of two things that are typically out-of-bounds in terms of who is evil and who has evil stuff done to them: the two things being, children and animals.
Normally (this is a generalization, of course), there's something about the very nature of these two things that makes us really not want to see them be evil, or have evil/bad things done to them... so it's not very often you see a movie that so graphically shows children and animals both being evil, and having evil/bad things done to them.
Awesome movie :-)

#3 - Posted by Geoff on November 8, 2002 9:46 AM:

Actually, I should clarify the thing about evil animals. Yeah, there are quite a few movies that feature really bad animals doing really bad things.
But still, animals that are often considered kind've like *pets* are usually exempt from being evil in movies, or from meeting untimely demises. :-)

#4 - Posted by randy on November 8, 2002 3:02 PM:

*cough* cujo *cough*

but yeah, as i've said, that horse part is probably the most disturbing thing i've ever seen in a movie...i can't get over it...as creepy was the movie was, THAT'S what i would lose sleep over :P

#5 - Posted by Geoff on November 8, 2002 5:39 PM:

Yeah, I had actually thought about Cujo. :-)
I did, however, put in a qualification in my original post saying that it was just a generalization.
But then again, Cujo is also a fairly effective horror movie, and that's probably because of the very reason I mentioned in my first post.

#9 - Posted by guiver on November 28, 2002 9:03 AM:

I think the ring was a kick ass movie, the one plot fall that I found kind of amussing was when the mother was surfing the internet looking up info on the crazy hourse lady the url was the temp folder on c drive

#10 - Posted by Kim on November 30, 2002 9:05 PM:

It was the scariest movie I have ever seen... It shouldn't of been but it was... now whenever I see the commercial on TV I flip out... oh and just hearing anything that sounds like Samara drives me insane

i'm kind of lost as to who the last two people who replied are...at least they have good taste in movies (and websites ;) )

#12 - Posted by Geoff on December 2, 2002 7:22 AM:

Mister "guiver" is my good buddy Kurt from Bruce's Country Market...
a certified black-belt, too :-)

Hmm... can't say that I know who Kim is though...

#13 - Posted by randy on December 9, 2002 12:19 AM:

haha! i'm just going through some of these old comments (which look different from the main page geoff, maybe a change is in order? ;) ) and i realized that i can find out a person's email address by clicking on their name (yeah, i'm slow :P )

so i return to the mystery that surrounds "kim" and find out that their address is "steve232@hotmail" ...what the heck? steve allen is "krusher-something," and i don't know any other steves...and despite having "dave" in my email address for a couple years, why the heck would "kim" be called "steve?"

i'm tempted to email them and that "tigerstripes" person who commented on the art section...just to figure out who the heck they are :\

I thought this movie was the greatest. I loved it from beggining to end. Every thing sent chills up my spine. Which is really wierd, I'm a huge horror movie buff and I don't get scared very easily. So when this movie scared the crap out of me I was amazed. Every scene was done just right to scare the movie goers. I think this movie was the best movie that Dream Works has ever made. This movie desrves high ratings.

#15 - Posted by Chris on February 3, 2003 8:29 PM:

I enjoyed the American version but the Japanese version creeped me out a lot more. It was more quiet and haunting with a far more disturbed villain and background.

#16 - Posted by Geoff on February 3, 2003 8:50 PM:

Hey, cool to see a couple new names around here!
Anyway, the DVD for "The Ring" comes out on March 4... the Japanese version (which I've not seen yet) comes out the same day. I'll probably get both :-)

#17 - Posted by randy on February 4, 2003 3:03 AM:

march 4th? man, that's gotta be the greatest day EVER!!!

thanks for stopping by chris (as everyone should check out his site...he's learned a lot of cool sitebuilding tricks and it's all neat and stuff)

monica, eh? monica from america??

i give up, whosisas??

#18 - Posted by Geoff on February 4, 2003 11:13 AM:

It's a great movie, so I wonder about their choice of cover-art for the DVD. I mean, I certainly didn't find it boring, but then why is Namoi Watts yawning?

#19 - Posted by Perry Downing on March 5, 2003 8:17 AM:

Are you kidding me? As I watched this movie, I had no idea what to expect. I didn't expect some of the pop outs like of the picture they took of the girl found in her closet. That was some good make up they did there. I seriously screamed at that part because I was taken off-guard. I don't care what any news review critics say, this movie provides the chills and thrills and has a mysterious plot that's well-made. You have to agree this movie is a whole lot better than Darkness Falls. Ringu looks just as good, but they have to have the English subtitles for me or I won't understand it. (Ringu is the Japanese version of The Ring.)

#20 - Posted by Geoff on March 5, 2003 9:25 AM:

Hey Perry (whoever you are!)...
Hmm, something weird is happening with these comments, as in my comment two posts up, there's supposed to be a picture of the DVD cover art for The Ring... as you could tell from my review, I thought it was an *excellent* movie, it's just that I find the cover art a little goofy because it shows a picture of Naomi Watts screaming, but it more-than-kinda looks like she's yawing.. :-)
I'll see if I can fix this soon....

#21 - Posted by randy on March 6, 2003 11:44 PM:

you know, i find the mystery people who leave comments here to be as interesting as the site itself haha

who are you and how did you find us? i'm just really curious, that's quite cool :D

#22 - Posted by Xavier Von Richter on March 9, 2003 12:54 PM:

This movie was awesome. I just bought it. What was up with the weird scenes after the movie? Did they mean something? The movie on the rack might mean a sequal! I sure hope so!

#23 - Posted by meris on May 9, 2003 9:21 PM:

after i watched the ring, i had a terror attack as i was trying to get to sleep due to the fact that there is a tv in my room, and ended up trying to distract myself til 6am by watching a stupid tim allen movie that made me want to vomit. my brother was also scared, but his solution was to put a picture and lean it up against the downstairs tv screen so that if something tried to come out, the picture would fall over and we'd know. the irony is that it was a picture of a horse. im personally unable to watch the scary movies coming out now. first there was resident evil, which was just unpleasant to watch because i was tense and jumpy the entire time, and then there was the ring which kept me afraid until i moved back to ubc where the only tv was in the lounge and was mounted 5 feet off the ground, and the image of that girl falling out of it was really damn funny....yet i have this urge that im repressing to see ringu.....

#24 - Posted by Great One on May 15, 2003 6:01 PM:

I wasn't too freaked out by the horse scene. I found the scene where the little girl climbed out of the well and started coming closer and closer the freakiest. Also on the dvd when you first put it in that's pretty damn scary. One thing I found funny was how the main woman character and her kid's father just walked into the old man's house. Didn't knock or anything just walked right in, and then watched a tape on his tv...

#25 - Posted by rowena on May 19, 2003 9:52 AM:

i really dont understand some things about this movie. who was the little girl's father? why did she have that effect on the horses? were the horses evil?

#26 - Posted by vixmasermic on May 20, 2003 1:27 PM:

Hehe, loved this movie. Had a few friends over to watch it and Shawn MAcdonald, who some of you probably know, said he had to keep looking away. I think he was actually watching the fireplace. Man I wish for some scenes I had been watching the fireplace, like the one where that girl is found dead in the closet! God damn! THat just gives me shivers just thinking about it. The make up was so good, and the way they just flash those scenes of the people who died from sheer fright ( at least I think thats what happened to them) are I think the freakiest parts of the movie. I must admit I had trouble sleeping after watching that movie...Definitely one of the freakiest I've seen in ages. I would like to rent or possibly download and watch the Japanese version (Ringu) I heard its freakier actually. If anyone would be interested in watching it let me know.

#27 - Posted by Amy on May 29, 2003 1:04 PM:

This is one of the most suspensful movies I have ever seen. Even though the theme was the basic scary person killing others for no reason, i thought that the general movie was very interesting. I watched this movie will my mom and had a blast freaking the shit out of her for the next week. Every morning i would say Day 1 or day 2etc. The eerie music, intense situations and the main theme was a plus for the movie and only made it come to life.

#28 - Posted by randy on May 29, 2003 11:00 PM:

this is the coolest thread ever...who ARE these people? hehe :D

#29 - Posted by SuperCoolMonkeyNinja on March 22, 2005 10:51 PM:

This movie kicked total ass...It was just awsome from beginning to end...

Unfortunately...The squel did not...in fact...The Ring 2 just sucked...I saw it yesterday...and it was absolutely terrible compair to the first one...not nearly as scary, way shittier plot, and just way higher of crap level...

I dunno if its because i had such high expectations because of the first one, but it defiantely did not live upto the reputation of the first one...

TOODLES!

#30 - Posted by SuperCoolMonkeyNinja on March 23, 2005 4:52 AM:

Did Ring 2 have same writer and director as the first movie?

TOODLES

#31 - Posted by Geoff on March 25, 2005 12:17 PM:

I'm not sure about the writer, but the director was different this time.
Yeah, it definitely wasn't nearly as good as the first one.
I guess it had some decent scares, but almost all of them were of the cheap 'something-jumps-out-of-the-side-of-the-screen' type scare, of course always accompanied by a loud 'shock-chord' in the soundtrack.
