Shaun of the Dead

Here's something you don't see very often: a really funny, well-acted, sometimes-touching, inventive indie British comedy... about zombies.

What makes Shaun of the Dead such a good film from an originality and plot-based point of view is also its strongest comedic element. The running joke for most of the film is that, when you're surrounded by glazed-eyes deadbeat slobbering losers day in and day out at work, at the pub, or in your rented apartment, it might take a little while before you realize that those same people have suddenly turned into zombies. I mean, they're pretty much acting in the same way that they always have (except that if you get too close to them they'll chew your neck open and rip your intestines out).

That's the situation that Shaun (Simon Pegg) and his dim-witted best friend Ed (Nick Frost) find themselves in. It takes them an hilariously long time to discover that almost their entire neighbourhood -- and in fact the entire country -- has been transformed into flesh-hungry zombies.

I won't say much more about Shaun of the Dead, as the film has a lot of really great jokes that you should experience for yourself. The humour, along with the highly original story and interesting non-zombified characters (and even the rocky relationships between Shaun and Ed, and Shaun and his girlfriend) make this one of the best comedies and one of the better movies I've seen in a long time.

Brilliant! British humour is brilliant! A romantic-comedy featuring zombies? I laughed so hard I nearly peed my pants! See it! It is awesome!

“Eyes Wide Shut” is paborbly the most challenging movie on the list, but I love the way the camera moves, among other things. Most of the movies on my list are pretty mainstream, not too challenging to a general audience (I don’t think so, anyway).I tried to watch “Barry Lyndon” a few years ago, and couldn’t get through the first 20 minutes. That was on VHS. Someday when I have nothing better to do, I’ll try it again on DVD.
