If ever there was a movie designed to appeal to the fantasies of 14-year-old boys, Sin City is it. It's chock full of over-the-top gritty violence, big guns, dirty gangsters, tough detectives, freaky mutants, martial-arts showdowns, vigilante justice, and, of course, all sorts of semi-clothed (and a few completely un-clothed) vuluptuous babes. The fact that the film is rated a hard "R" (for very good reason) no doubt makes it even more appealing to the male adolescent crowd.
Is it a good movie though? Well, it's not bad. Sin City is actually a collection of three different stories, all set in the same fictional location of Basin City (whose neon "Welcome To" sign sports two strategically-defective letters). Each story is a sort of film-noir vigilante deal, invariably ending in a violent bloodbath with nasty death or three. Unfortunately, none of the stories are particularly deep, interesting, or meaningful, and their disconnectedness makes it all seem a bit pointless.
Where the film does deserve some serious credit though is in its look. The film uses CGI to create a bleak but very moody black-and-white 'underworld', of sorts, Sin City is far and away the most 'comic-book-looking' movie I've seen, and that's no small feat considering how many other comic-book movie adaptations have attempted that sort of look without nearly as much success.
There's a lot of style in Sin City, and I liked what it had to offer in that area. But without much substance, it felt a little empty.
i love sin city, the comic...the movie basically IS the comic (not an adaptation, but line for line, shot for shot, the COMIC on the screen)
...but i didn't love the movie
sure, i thought it was great looking and the stories were obviously something i enjoyed, but there were two things that kept me from flat out LOVING this movie:
1~the gore...blood doesn't bother me at all, but it was really unsettling seeing it live action rather than drawn...it was pretty excessive, not like kill bill, which was "over the top," sin city was right at the top
2~the separated stories...it just didn't seem like a movie so much as it did three episodes of "sin city: the tv show"
there were so many oportunities to lace the stories together, but they didn't (which is fine, that definitely must have been a choice they consciously made, but i would have gone in a more connected direction)
i would have prefered dwight's original story rather than this one too, just because marv was involved and stuff, it would have helped to connect it
loved the frank miller camio and i'll definitely get the dvd
well, i loved this movie, from the amazing special affects to the actors to the dialogue i thought it all fit perfectly they were all a match for each otehr. I also found hte stories intriguing and i liked the vagueness of how the 3 stories were joined u dont really notice but britany murphy kinda links them all together. I thought there was a couple characters who threw in superb performances, 2 especially one was micky roarke, and the other was the woman who played miho, she didnt say a word but yet she didnt have to the looks she gave and the silentness of her was perfect
I myself give this 5 stars and would highly recommend this to anyone
