Stargate

3.0 / 5

Sometime in the 1920's, an archeological expedition discovers a gigantic stone ring covered in strange Egyptian-style heiroglyphics. In the "Present Day" (as the title-card so helpfully points out), a nerdy linguist named Daniel Jackson (played by James Spader) is finally able to translate the heiroglyphics and determine that the "Stargate" is a portal to another dimension. After punching in the correct 'combination', the Stargate opens. A military expedition led by Colonel Jack O'Niel (Kurt Russell), and accompanied by Daniel, passes through the Stargate and finds themselves in an area resembling ancient Egypt -- except that the people there seem to be ruled over by a group of psuedo-robotic Egyptian-god-like beings. A variety of problems arise, including a nuclear bomb brought along by Colonel O'Niel, and a revolt against the god-like rulers that is sparked by the expedition (oh, and there's a sappy love-story that developes between Daniel and one of the Egyptian women). Of course, all of this stuff is worked out in favour of the 'good guys' by the end of the film.

What Stargate lacks in terms of good writing, it makes up for with its originality and art direction. I say 'originality' not to describe the plot (which is really rather conventional), but to describe the setting and backstory. The alternate-history angle is pretty cool, as are the robotic god-like dudes (they're both cool and kinda creepy), and the interior set designs of the various temples and spaceships. They really went to a lot of trouble to make this alternate-history idea seem plausable and realistic, and I think they did a good job.

If only they had gone to as much trouble to create a solid script...

it's been ages since i've seen stargate, but it's probably the best sci-fi movie i've ever seen (if it's anything like i remember)

i can't remember details about the writing, but as you said, the story was pretty cool and interesting, but i also think it had a great deal of characterization (like what happened with kurt russel and his son)

i seem to remember the *decoding* part really stupid though, like buddy comes in and is all like "no, you missed this one obvious symbol and that changes everything!" (or wait, was that even stargate? now i'm thinking it said "iceland" instead of "ireland" and it's from a whole different movie...what the heck was that? haha, good god, i'm crazy...whatever movie that was, it kinda sucked...and the decoding part of stargate probably sucked too, but the rest was cool in my books :)

I know what you mean about the decoding bit (that's a definite example of the not-so-great writing I mentioned).. I mean, they say they've been able to figure out the first 6 elements/symbols of what is a apparently a 7-part "code"... So the nerdy linguist enters the scene and is miraculously able to figure it out. The thing is, I mean the Stargate only seems to have, like, 15 different symbols, so why didn't the stupid scientists just go through and try all 15 until they found the one that worked??
Hehe, but still, it was a fairly decent movie. I hear ya, Randy, about remembering it to be a really cool movie. It still sort've is, but I admit it really was nowhere near as cool as I seem to remember it being.
