Syriana

Syriana is a difficult movie, about oil, business, media, politics, religion, terrorism, and above all, corruption. It's about how corruption can and does infiltrate every one of those other things, and even goes so far as to have one character -- in a very powerful stretch of dialogue -- suggest that corruption is a necessary evil that, on the whole, does more to benefit society than to harm it. But what of the young Pakistani Muslim who falls prey to an Islamic extremist group and commits the ultimate 'sacrifice'? Was corruption to blame? American or Middle Eastern?

Maybe, maybe not. As it likely seems from the preceding paragraph, Syriana is a complex movie. It embraces that complexity, too, and wastes little time bothering to 'explain' everything that's going on. In that sense, it's at times confusing, and a little difficult to follow. However, I think that's partially the intent of the filmmakers (writer/director Stephen Gaghan also wrote Traffic, which shares some of the same characteristics as Syriana); the effect is that we're thrown into the middle of what appear to be much larger events. The relative lack of normal 'plot' progression gives the movie an air of realism and authenticity that underscores the overall seriousness of the film.

Syriana is by no means an 'easy' film to watch. I got the sense that a second viewing would really open things up, and but whereas that can also be said of a lot of other 'complicated' movies, I really do want to see Syriana again, which is not always the case with such films.

Nice review Geoff, I too enjoyed Syriana. While I found it slightly confusing I think it all tied together nicely and most of it made sense. I was lucky enough to see it twice and upon another viewing I enjoyed it even more, it's now my current #4 of the year. Oh by the way, it's Justin, and the site's great.
