Thirteen Conversations About One Thing

"Our lives seem to make so much more sense when we re-live them backwards. It's too bad we have to live them forwards."

I wasn't counting exactly how many conversations were had in this film, and the dialogue seemed to touch on more than one subject. But nevertheless, this is a really great little film.

Funny that, after writing about the dialogue-driven, time-shifting Pulp Fiction, Thirteen Conversations About One Thing is the very next movie I watch, and it's quite similar in those two respects. The movie is basically about three or four individuals who don't know each other, but throughout a period of a month or so, they each end up interacting with or affecting the others, for better or for worse. Like I mentioned, the "conversations" that they have deal with a number of topics, such as happiness (which I took to be the one 'overall' theme of the movie), guilt, and luck. It's fascinating how, in one way or another, all of the interactions between the various characters stem from one or more of these themes.

This is one of those small, low-key movies that doesn't seem to get much publicity because there are no big names attached to it, zero special-effects, and no real "plot" or storyline to speak of. What it is, though, is a smart, engaging, and personal movie with real ideas.

(I'd like to throw in a recommendation here for another of my favourite movies, that's similar in some of these respects. It's called You Can Count On Me).
