War of the Worlds

Steven Spielberg tends to make films that are unique, intelligent, dramatic, thought-provoking, and often action-packed. His adeptness at combining all of these traits at a high level of quality is why he's such a great filmmaker.

War of the Worlds, however, is not one of those films. It isn't particularly dramatic, nor is it very thought-provoking. The 'aliens mercilessly attacking earth' plot has been done many times before (like, oh, in the original version of War of the Worlds), so I definitely wouldn't call it unique.

What it is, though, is an extremely well-made action/suspense popcorn movie. It's a movie that does one thing, and does it really well: it cranks up the tension almost right off the bat, and keeps it up right until the very end. I liken these kinds of movies to really good roller-coasters; sure, maybe they don't have the fancy Disneyland-style scenery, ‘theming’, or atmosphere that some coasters have (that is, they don't have dramatic plots, complex characters, or unique ideas), but when you strap in for a ride like this, all you want to do get thrashed around at insane speeds and hold on for your life.

War of the Worlds is kind of like that.

I liked it but, it didnt work that well for me. they messed with the story too much. and the ending, well lets just say Spielberg tries to pretty things up too much kind of like how A.I. droned on and on with sappy family happy go lucky stuff. It seemed that this one was more about a broken family in the setting of war of the worlds rather than being anywhere close to the original story. I was hoping the movie could have taken place in the early 1900s like the jeff wayne music version. less room to modernize the story.

I liked the movie a lot, but think that if they had kept it set in the time it was originally set in then it would have worked better. In this day of underground construction, mining, and sonar, I find it difficult to believe that we wouldn't have known about the machines beneath the earth.

I got swept up in the tension of the movie, and even forgot to breathe sometimes, which was really good for me. And I have realized that I like Tom Cruise as an actor, just not as Tom Cruise. You know that scene where he is "birthed" bythe spaceship? I think that is real... and it was at that time that the real, normal, Tom Cruise was replced by this alien clone. It was like War of the worlds meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
